Republic of Moldova elected to UN Human Rights Council for second time

The Republic of Moldova has been elected, for the second time, as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2027–2029 term. The result reaffirms the country’s commitment to promoting and protecting fundamental rights, as well as to the values and principles of the United Nations.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the new mandate reflects the Republic of Moldova’s determination to actively contribute to the protection of human rights at the international level, in line with the objectives of its European path and its status as a candidate country for European Union membership.

During its mandate, the Republic of Moldova plans to promote inclusive societies based on equality and education, strengthen democratic resilience, information integrity and civic participation, and support the protection of human rights in the digital era.

At the same time, the country will focus on accountability and protection in situations of conflict and crisis, as well as on strengthening effective multilateralism.

The mandate was secured through the coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the diplomatic missions of the Republic of Moldova. The diplomatic missions in New York and Geneva played a particularly important role in promoting and supporting the candidacy.

The UN Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body composed of 47 member states, responsible for promoting and protecting human rights worldwide. It examines situations involving violations of fundamental rights, adopts resolutions and issues recommendations aimed at strengthening respect for fundamental rights and freedoms.

Through this new mandate, the Republic of Moldova will have the opportunity to participate in international efforts to defend human rights and strengthen multilateral mechanisms for their protection.
