Parliaments of Moldova, Turkey to strengthen bilateral cooperation

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu today met President of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmuş, on the sidelines of the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, held in Geneva, Switzerland, on July 29-31.

During the discussions, Igor Grosu informed about the progress made by Moldova in the process of moving closer to the European Union and about the preparations for the autumn elections, which he deemed essential for the future of the country. The Moldovan official appreciated the support provided by Turkey for Moldova's European path and emphasized the importance of strengthening the bilateral parliamentary cooperation.

“I had a good discussion with my Turkish counterpart. We agreed to strengthen communication and collaboration between our countries' parliaments,” said Igor Grosu.

Also on the sidelines of the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, Igor Grosu discussed the security situation in Europe and bilateral relations with the Speaker of the Majilis (legislature) of Kazakhstan, Yerlan Koshanov.

“We agreed to explore how we can advance collaboration in key areas, such as agriculture and exports. I appreciated their interest in the progress made by our country in the accession process,” noted the Moldovan parliament speaker.

Speaker Igor Grosu is attending the World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union in cooperation with the United Nations and held every five years. The meeting, now at its sixth edition, provides a forum for dialogue among legislative leaders from around the world. The event's agenda includes debates on such topics as inter-parliamentary cooperation, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, digital transformation and protecting the rights of vulnerable people.

Igor Grosu delivered a speech during the plenary session, focused on the role of parliaments in defending democracy, protecting citizens and maintaining peace. At the same time, the parliament speaker has meetings scheduled with other counterparts and will have an encounter with the Moldovan community members in Switzerland.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union, founded in 1889, is the world's first multilateral political organization, bringing together 181 national parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary organizations.
