Moldovan government promises bigger awards for sportspeople medaled at international competitions

Moldovan sportspeople who win medals at major international competitions, including the World University Games, will receive more substantial financial awards. Minister of Education and Research Dan Perciun has made statements to this effect, in the context of the outstanding results achieved by the national university team.

The minister publicly congratulated wrestlers Adil Osmanov and Ivan Corsunov, who won gold medals at 2025 year’s edition of the World University Games, recently held in Chengdu, China.

“Thank you for having represented us with dignity and proving, once again, that the Moldovan sport has a future. You are an example for the youth of Moldova,” said Dan Perciun in a message addressed to the national team.

At the same time, the official specified that the Ministry of Education and Research was currently working on drafting a government decision that will allow for the increase of financial awards for sportspeople who podium at major international competitions.

Notable Performances for Moldova: Adil Osmanov won the gold medal in freestyle wrestling, 74 kg category, achieving a flawless path against opponents from Japan, Iran and the USA. For his part, Ivan Corsunov triumphed at the 86 kg category, dominating the final with a clear score and impressing with his technique and determination.

The two wrestlers are considered among the most promising representatives of Moldovan sports, and their success at the World University Games confirms their good form and potential qualification for major competitions, such as the World Championships or the Olympic Games.

Moldova has won three medals at the current edition of the World University Games – two gold and one bronze – confirming an upward trend of young Moldovan sportspeople on the international stage.
