Government warns about serious fraud attempt: theft of personal data, illegal contracting of loans in names of Moldovan citizens
The government's spokesperson, Daniel Voda, today warned citizens about "a serious fraud attempt, involving the theft of personal data and the illegal contracting of loans in names of Moldovan citizens."
"The Shor crime ring abusively collected, in some cases without people's knowledge, personal data and transmitted it to a bank in the Russian Federation. Subsequently, this data was illegally used to open loans or microloans in names of our citizens. This means that some people from the Gagauz autonomy and other regions might wake up with debts in Russia — without ever having signed a contract. Just because they left a copy of their ID, for example, at a local institution controlled by this group," the government’s spokesperson said.
Under these circumstances, he warned citizens not to transmit personal data outside the legal framework, neither to unofficial institutions nor through messaging networks, nor online.
Daniel Voda noted that the authorities are working to document these cases and hold the individuals involved accountable.
At the same time, the official urged citizens to be vigilant and report suspicious cases.
"If you have recently provided personal data or if you receive 'suspicious aid' in the name of a foreign bank — doublecheck and report," Daniel Voda added.
