Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi held a meeting today with President of Albania Bajram Begaj, who is on an official visit to Chișinău. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral dialogue in the context of the Republic of Moldova and Albania’s status as candidate countries for accession to the European Union.

The parties underlined the importance of close cooperation in advancing the European path of both states, including by making use of the opportunities offered by the EU enlargement process.

Popșoi praised Albania’s experience in the process of accession to the European Union and its willingness to support the Republic of Moldova in this process.

“Albania is an important partner for the Republic of Moldova, and its expertise in the field of European integration is a valuable support for our reform efforts. We are interested in intensifying cooperation through exchanges of expertise and best practices, as well as in developing joint projects,” Mihai Popșoi stated.

President Bajram Begaj appreciated the nature of bilateral relations and expressed “his country’s commitment to supporting the European path of the Republic of Moldova.”

The discussions also highlighted the importance of regional cooperation and the coordination of positions within multilateral formats, as essential tools for promoting stability, security and sustainable development in the region.

The parties addressed the expansion of cooperation in the economic and trade sectors, with an emphasis on identifying new opportunities for collaboration, including in the tourism sector. They underlined the potential of both countries to develop sustainable economic partnerships that would contribute to increasing trade exchanges, attracting investment and strengthening ties between business communities.

Bajram Begaj is paying an official visit to the Republic of Moldova from 18 to 20 January this year, at the invitation of Head of State Maia Sandu. This is the first visit of an Albanian head of state in more than twenty years and comes in the context of intensified bilateral relations, with both countries being candidates for accession to the European Union.

The Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Albania established diplomatic relations on 23 December 1992. To date, the two countries have signed 14 bilateral agreements.
