European Parliament calls for speeding up accession of Moldova, Ukraine to EU
The European Parliament is calling for the acceleration of the accession of Moldova and Ukraine to the EU. In a recent statement, MEP Siegfried Muresan emphasized the importance of the quick integration of Moldova and Ukraine into the European Union, in the current geopolitical context and for the security of the EU’s eastern flank.
“EU enlargement is one of the most important instruments for guaranteeing our security, the one of Romania and of the European Union. Only with a stable Moldova and Ukraine, firmly anchored on the European path, can we ensure the long-term security of the eastern flank,” Muresan said.
According to the cited source, the European Parliament today adopted an official position on enlargement policy, which includes the following key points: speeding up accession negotiations with Moldova and Ukraine, by opening discussions on clusters and at the official, not only technical, level; ensuring a merit-based accession process, so that states which meet the conditions are not held back for political reasons; gradual integration of candidate countries into the EU, so that their citizens can benefit from European advantages even before full accession.
