The Republic of Moldova and Azerbaijan will cooperate on the basis of an Interministerial Consultation Plan for the period 2026–2027, which will help intensify bilateral diplomatic dialogue. Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popșoi and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Azerbaijan Jeyhun Bayramov signed the document today in Baku.
The two officials discussed the development of Moldovan–Azerbaijani relations and prospects for deepening bilateral dialogue in several areas of common interest. They underlined the importance of economic cooperation and noted the positive trend in trade exchanges recorded in 2025. At the same time, interest was expressed in expanding cooperation in the economic, trade, and investment fields.
An important topic of the discussions was the energy sector, which could become one of the key areas of the bilateral relationship. Popșoi reiterated that ensuring energy security by diversifying sources and routes of natural gas supply is one of the main priorities of the Government of the Republic of Moldova. He also thanked the Azerbaijani authorities for the support offered to Moldova, including during the 2022 energy crisis, a gesture that reconfirmed the relationship of friendship and trust between the two states.
“We want to expand economic and energy cooperation and fully harness the potential of our relations. The Republic of Azerbaijan is an important partner for strengthening energy security and for developing joint projects for the benefit of our citizens,” said Popșoi.
For his part, Jeyhun Bayramov reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s readiness to deepen bilateral dialogue and develop cooperation projects in areas of common interest. The Azerbaijani official stressed the importance of maintaining an active and pragmatic political dialogue between the two states.
“The relations between Azerbaijan and the Republic of Moldova are developing in a spirit of friendship and mutual respect, including in the economic, energy, cultural, and educational fields. Since 2023, the capitals of the two states have been connected by direct flights, which facilitates people-to-people contacts and cooperation between business communities. We welcome the interest in expanding cooperation, including through investments and renewable energy projects, as well as through regional green energy initiatives,” noted Jeyhun Bayramov.
The meeting agenda also included cooperation within international organizations, as well as regional security developments. The parties reaffirmed their mutual support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Azerbaijan and stressed the importance of peace and stability in the region.
Popșoi reiterated his invitation to his counterpart to pay an official visit to the Republic of Moldova and to participate in the Ministerial Session of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, which will take place in Chișinău on 14–15 May 2026.
Popșoi is paying a working visit to Baku today at the invitation of his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov. The program includes meetings with the President of Parliament (Milli Majlis), Sahiba Gafarova, as well as with First Deputy Minister of Economy Elnur Aliyev and representatives of the energy company SOCAR. The official will also lay flowers at the Alley of Honor and at the grave of national leader Heydar Aliyev.
