Speaker: Moldova’s withdrawal from CIS could be completed by Easter

The Republic of Moldova could complete the procedure for withdrawing from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) in the coming weeks. The statements were made today at the beginning of the Parliament sitting by Speaker Igor Grosu.

“The opinion on withdrawal from the agreement is now being sent back to the Government, which must make the decision and submit the draft to Parliament. We will settle the final stage here, so I hope that in two weeks it will be completed – it’s not a complicated procedure,” Grosu said.

Yesterday, the members of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Policy approved the consultative opinions on the denunciation of the CIS Founding Agreement, the related Protocol, and the CIS Statute.

Thus, the Republic of Moldova will withdraw definitively from the CIS statutory bodies, which will lead to the termination of annual contribution payments of approximately 3.1 million lei to the CIS unified budget.

Of the 283 agreements concluded within the CIS, 71 have already been denounced by the Republic of Moldova, and about 60 are currently under review.

The denunciation of these agreements was initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which argues that the CIS’s core values and principles are not being respected, particularly the provision under which member states recognize and mutually respect territorial integrity and the inviolability of existing borders.
