Parliament welcomes Moldova’s progress in press freedom ranking

The Republic of Moldova has climbed four positions in the 2026 Press Freedom Index, reaching 31st place, according to the ranking published by Reporters Without Borders, MP Marcela Adam said at the opening of today’s plenary session of Parliament.

The MP underlined that this progress reflects significant developments in the field of press freedom.

“The Republic of Moldova has climbed four positions and now ranks 31st in the 2026 Press Freedom Index, published by Reporters Without Borders,” said Marcela Adam.

The deputy recalled that World Press Freedom Day is marked on 3 May, emphasizing the importance of this moment for reflecting on the role of the media.

“On 3 May we will mark World Press Freedom Day, a special occasion to celebrate the fundamental principles of a free press and to remind ourselves how important independent media are in a democratic society,” she said.

Marcela Adam conveyed a message of appreciation to journalists, highlighting their role in informing the public.

“I would like to extend congratulations to all honest journalists who choose every day to promote the truth. You demonstrate that journalism is not just a profession, but a mission in the interest of citizens and of the country,” the deputy noted.

She also referred to the role of the press in exposing corruption and attempts at information manipulation.

“Our society has gained a better understanding of the dangers of corruption, has seen how shadowy networks have tried to influence the country’s destiny, and has acquired the tools needed to distinguish truth from falsehood. Where others tried to hide things, you brought them to light. Where intimidation was attempted, you responded with dignity,” Marcela Adam declared.

In conclusion, the deputy emphasized the importance of an independent press for democracy.

“We know it is not easy, we know that sometimes the struggle is unequal, but precisely under these conditions your courage becomes all the more valuable, and your integrity all the more necessary. The Republic of Moldova needs you, and our future depends to a great extent on your strength to call things by their name,” Marcela Adam concluded.

World Press Freedom Day is marked annually on 3 May and was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, at the initiative of UNESCO. The date serves to underline the importance of a free press and to remind governments of their obligation to respect freedom of expression.
