Moldovan president: We want just peace in Ukraine
The Republic of Moldova desires a just and durable peace in Ukraine, President Maia Sandu declared today in the Parliament's plenary session. The head of state talked about the security risks facing the Republic of Moldova and urged citizens towards unity.
Maia Sandu emphasized that the Republic of Moldova can protect its peace and freedom only through external solidarity and internal unity. The presence of Russian troops on our territory poses risks in the context of the war in Ukraine, and security can be ensured only through strong partnerships with states that respect international law.
“From the first day, our position has been clear – we stand for peace, not aggression, and we are doing everything to maintain peace in Moldova through diplomacy. We can ensure the country's security by keeping a correct, predictable, and consistent behavior, building strong partnerships with our neighbors Romania and Ukraine, as well as with other countries that respect international law and the borders of other states. Moldova is a small country with a foreign army on its territory. To be clear, I am referring to the illegal stationing of the Russian military contingent in the Transnistrian region – a flagrant violation of our status as a neutral country. The presence of the Russian army on our land poses destabilization risks, especially in the context of the war in Ukraine,” Maia Sandu said.
The president mentioned that regardless of when peace will be signed for Ukraine, this country will endure and will continue to be supported by the states that desire peace on the European continent. Maia Sandu emphasized that the Republic of Moldova must not be drawn into the war or used against Ukraine.
“The fourth Easter is approaching, which our Ukrainian neighbors will spend under the threat of weapons. We all wish and pray for the conclusion of a just, durable peace agreement as soon as possible. But regardless of whether peace is signed this year or not, Ukraine will continue to resist with the steadfast support of countries that want to restore peace on our continent. Ukraine will continue to be our shield, and we have the moral duty not to allow Moldova to be used against Ukraine, not to allow our country to be drawn into the war. In this new global context, we need strong international relationships, friends who will help and protect us,” Maia Sandu said.
Maia Sandu delivered a speech on 17 April in the Parliament's plenary session, urging citizens to follow a common path that will bring peace, security, economic growth, and prosperity. The head of state assured that, in the next four years, the Republic of Moldova could become a full member of the European Union.
