Convergence fund for Transnistrian region expected to finance infrastructure, education and public services

The convergence fund dedicated to the reintegration process must serve as an instrument for citizens and support projects in infrastructure, public services, education, healthcare and local development, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Valeriu Chiveri told an interview with MOLDPRES.

According to the official, the fund should not be viewed solely as a financial instrument, but as a mechanism through which closer ties between the two banks of the Dniester can generate concrete benefits for people.

“Citizens must feel that closer ties with the right bank bring them concrete benefits. This means infrastructure, public services, education, healthcare and local projects,” Valeriu Chiveri said.

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that clear rules, criteria, transparency, as well as monitoring and oversight mechanisms are necessary for the fund to operate.

In this context, the authorities in Chișinău are also counting on the support and contribution of international partners.

“The Convergence Fund should not be viewed as a financial instrument in itself. It must be an instrument for bringing the two banks closer together,” Chiveri said.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the reintegration process must be built from the bottom up, through people, education, services and opportunities. In this context, the authorities believe that improving living conditions and creating concrete benefits for citizens can contribute to the region’s gradual rapprochement with the Republic of Moldova.
