Prime Minister of Greece in Chisinau
Greece will continue to be a firm advocate for the European future of the Republic of Moldova and is ready to share its experience and provide the necessary technical expertise to the country in aligning with European standards. The statement was made by Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis, who is visiting Chisinau today. The official encouraged the Republic of Moldova to continue its European path, despite all difficulties, and to boost reforms.
The Greek Prime Minister said that his visit to Chisinau reflects Greece's strong commitment to deepening cooperation between the two states, strengthening bilateral relations, and creating a common European future together.
The official noted that Moldova has achieved remarkable progress on the path to integration into the European family despite complicated circumstances, saying that difficult but necessary reforms have been implemented.
"The reforms related to the European integration project may sometimes seem difficult or politically painful, but they are worth it in the medium and long term. In an environment where populist voices are becoming stronger, it is important to emphasize that Europe and European integration remain a sign of stability. This is the direction in which the Republic of Moldova must advance, as the benefits far exceed the short-term costs. The European direction of the Republic of Moldova will benefit all the people in this country," said Kyriakos Mitsotakis at a press conference held alongside head of state Maia Sandu.
In this context, the Greek Prime Minister offered the example of his country, which was among the first to join the EU.
"I reaffirm our commitment to the European path of the Republic of Moldova. As a country that joined the European community in 1991, being the tenth EU member, we know how important this commitment is in anchoring a country within the acquis communautaire and also providing geopolitical support. We have always strongly supported the decision to offer your country candidate status and the opening of accession negotiations," the Greek official mentioned.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis further added that the Republic of Moldova can count on Greece's support amidst the complex challenges facing our country.
"We reiterated strong support for the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and are aware of the complex challenges your country faces concerning this Russian invasion and the war in Ukraine. Greece supports you, and you can always count on our support," emphasized the Greek Prime Minister.
The official also emphasized that Greece has always supported the EU enlargement process, mentioning that this is a strategic investment in the prosperity, peace, and security of the region, especially in the current geopolitical context. "The future of the Western Balkan countries, the Republic of Moldova, and Ukraine is in Europe," stated the Prime Minister of Greece.
In the economic field, the Greek official said that there is unused potential to enhance bilateral trade between the Republic of Moldova and Greece, especially in strengthening business ties.
"We discussed cooperation in the energy field at length. Greece can contribute to improving the energy security of the Republic of Moldova through the Southern Energy Corridor and especially through Alexandroupolis terminal. We talked about how to ensure that this corridor functions well and is price-competitive, which would be important for the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine," declared Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Prime Minister stated that Greece generates over 50% of its electricity from renewable resources and has encouraged Greek companies to actively contribute to Moldova's efforts to further develop renewable products. "And I am sure that very soon we will see very concrete results," the official said.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis is paying a working visit to the Republic of Moldova today. The high official was welcomed in the morning at the Government by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, and later the agenda included a meeting with head of state Maia Sandu.
