United States of America marks Independence Day

The United States of America is celebrating Independence Day today, marking 250 years since the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. On this occasion, the Parliament and the Triumphal Arch in the center of the capital were illuminated on Friday evening in the colors of the American flag, as a symbol of the friendship and partnership relations between the Republic of Moldova and the USA.

On U.S. Independence Day, the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States in the Republic of Moldova, Nick Pietrowicz, delivered a video message in which he emphasized that the holiday is an opportunity for reflection on history, as well as a moment of joy celebrated together with family and friends.

"For Americans, Independence Day is more than a day off. It is an opportunity to reflect on our history and our good fortune. Our republic was founded on the principle that government exists for the benefit of the people, not for a monarch or an aristocracy. With this freedom, Americans have built the strongest and most prosperous country in history. We celebrate this success every July 4 with barbecues, block parties and fireworks. It is a time to relax with friends and family. In the United States of America, the Fourth of July is a moment of joy. We enjoy the blessing of freedom obtained 250 years ago in Philadelphia. Happy Independence Day," said Nick Pietrowicz.

On the eve of the anniversary, the Embassy of the United States of America in Chisinau organized an official reception attended by representatives of the Moldovan authorities, the diplomatic corps, the business community and civil society. In opening the event, the Chargé d'Affaires of the United States in the Republic of Moldova, Nick Pietrowicz, stressed that the anniversary is not only an occasion to celebrate American independence, but also an opportunity to highlight the common values shared by the United States and the Republic of Moldova.

"The American people and the people of the Republic of Moldova cherish freedom, individual liberty and work. It is precisely these shared values that explain why the United States stood by the Republic of Moldova in the past, stands by it today and will continue to support it in the future," the American diplomat said.

Independence Day on July 4, also known as the "Fourth of July", is one of the most important national holidays in the United States. Americans mark this day with parades, concerts, official ceremonies, picnics and family gatherings, sports competitions and fireworks shows organized in almost every city.

The first festivities dedicated to Independence Day took place as early as 1777 in Philadelphia, and over time the tradition has spread throughout the country. In 1870, the U.S. Congress declared July 4 a federal holiday, and since 1938 it has been a paid day off for federal employees.

The American flag is the central symbol of the festivities, and in the capital, Washington, the traditional "A Capitol Fourth" concert takes place, followed by one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in the country. In 2026, the United States will mark 250 years since the proclamation of independence, an anniversary celebrated through the national program America 250, which includes cultural, historical and civic events held throughout the year.

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress officially approved the Declaration of Independence, an event that led to the birth of the United States of America.
