US Embassy marks 250 years of United States independence
The Embassy of the United States of America in Chișinău hosted an official reception to mark the 250th anniversary of the proclamation of the independence of the United States. The event brought together representatives of the Moldovan authorities, diplomatic staff, business community and civil society.
In his opening remarks, Chargé d’Affaires of the United States in the Republic of Moldova Nick Pietrowicz emphasized that the anniversary is not only an opportunity to celebrate American independence, but also an occasion to highlight the common values shared by the United States and the Republic of Moldova.
“The American people and the people of the Republic of Moldova cherish freedom, individual liberty and work. These very shared values explain why the United States stood by the Republic of Moldova in the past, stands by it today, and will continue to support it in the future,” the American diplomat said.
According to Pietrowicz, since the proclamation of the independence of the Republic of Moldova, the United States has provided nearly 3 billion dollars in foreign assistance. He recalled investments in infrastructure, including the modernization of the M2 road to Soroca, projects aimed at combating corruption, renovating schools and fire stations, modernizing the healthcare system, developing social services, and supporting refugees.
The diplomat also highlighted new projects currently under way, including the Liberty Line initiative, worth 130 million dollars, which will connect the Republic of Moldova to Western energy sources and strengthen the country’s energy security.
He also mentioned the recently announced 8 million dollars to strengthen cybersecurity, which complements other American investments in this field. Nick Pietrowicz reiterated the United States’ support for the territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, including the Transnistrian region, stating that residents on both banks of the Dniester River deserve “a safe, peaceful and prosperous future.”
Referring to the future United States embassy in Chișinău, the diplomat announced that by the same period next year construction works are expected to begin on the site of the former Republican Stadium, which will be transformed into a space that will include green areas, commercial opportunities, and diplomatic facilities. The reception was also attended by Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Alexandru Munteanu, who said that the United States Declaration of Independence has inspired entire generations with the idea that freedom belongs to the people, not to rulers.
“Today we are celebrating not only the independence of the United States, but also the enduring strength of our democratic and economic partnership. History shows us that the true greatness of a country is not determined only by geography, but by the strength of its values, by the courage of its people, and by the generosity of its friends,” the Prime Minister said.
The official pointed out that American support is visible throughout the Republic of Moldova, through modernized roads, investments in energy security, renovated schools and hospitals, as well as the modernization of border crossing points. “These are not just projects. They are the concrete proof of a partnership built on freedom, democracy, and respect for people,” Alexandru Munteanu said, thanking the American people for the support offered to the Republic of Moldova over the past 35 years.
The President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Moldova (AmCham Moldova) also spoke at the event, stressing that the 250th anniversary of independence symbolizes the resilience and capacity of the United States to adapt and remain a global leader in the economy, technology, and innovation. He noted that the Moldovan-American partnership is also reflected in the development of the digital sector, recalling the recent visit to Chișinău by representatives of major American technology companies for discussions on the digital future of the Republic of Moldova.
The National Day of the United States of America, celebrated annually on July 4, marks the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by the Second Continental Congress in 1776, a document through which the 13 British colonies in North America proclaimed their independence from Great Britain and laid the foundations of the United States of America. The Declaration of Independence, drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, enshrines the fundamental principles of the American state, affirming that all men are created equal and are endowed with inalienable rights, among which are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The first festivities dedicated to Independence Day took place as early as 1777 in Philadelphia, and over time the tradition expanded throughout the country. In 1870, the US Congress declared July 4 a federal holiday, and since 1938 it has been a paid day off for federal employees.
July 4, also known as the “Fourth of July,” is one of the most important national holidays in the United States. Americans mark this day with parades, concerts, official ceremonies, picnics and family gatherings, sports competitions, and fireworks displays held in almost every city.
The American flag is the central symbol of the festivities, and in the capital, Washington, the traditional “A Capitol Fourth” concert is held, followed by one of the most spectacular fireworks shows in the country. In 2026, the United States will mark 250 years since the proclamation of independence, an anniversary celebrated through the national America 250 program, which includes cultural, historical and civic events held throughout the year.
