Consultations in Chișinău: Officials from Moldova and Greece discuss regional security and deepening bilateral cooperation

The Republic of Moldova and Greece are strengthening their political dialogue and bilateral cooperation, including in the context of security challenges generated by Russia’s war against Ukraine and developments in the Middle East. These topics were addressed during the Moldovan-Greek political consultations held on Tuesday in Chișinău.

The consultations were chaired by State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Carolina Perebinos and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Republic Alexandra Papadopoulou.

One of the main topics of the meeting concerned the regional and international security situation. The officials conducted an extensive exchange of views on the consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine and developments in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of maintaining stability, respecting the principles of international law, and strengthening cooperation to manage security challenges.

At the same time, the parties reviewed the state of Moldovan-Greek relations, highlighting the positive dynamics of the political dialogue and the mutual interest in developing cooperation in the economic and investment fields, energy, connectivity, culture and tourism, as well as in strengthening interinstitutional collaboration.

During the consultations, the possibilities of expanding the bilateral legal framework were also examined, by promoting new instruments to facilitate the deepening of relations between the two states. The officials also discussed coordinating positions within international organizations, including within the United Nations, with a focus on reciprocal support for candidacies in elective bodies.

The agenda of the discussions also included the European path of the Republic of Moldova. State Secretary Carolina Perebinos thanked the Greek authorities for their constant support for our country’s European integration process and reaffirmed Chișinău’s commitment to continue implementing the reforms necessary for accession to the European Union.

At the end of the consultations, the two sides reiterated the importance of political dialogue and close cooperation for strengthening peace, stability, resilience and security in the region, underlining the need for a coordinated response to the challenges facing the European area.

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu held a meeting with Alexandra Papadopoulou, who is on a working visit to Chișinău.

In the second half of 2027, Greece will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The Head of State expressed confidence that this period will be an opportunity for the European path of the Republic of Moldova and underlined the shared commitment to translate the increasingly dynamic political dialogue between the two countries into concrete cooperation in support of the accession process.
