European Council President at EU–Moldova Summit says Moldova deserves to get European Union membership as soon as possible

Moldova deserves to get accession to the European Union as soon as possible. President of the European Council António Costa has made statements to this effect at the opening of the second EU–Moldova Summit, which is taking place in Brussels today.

The official welcomed the opening of the first negotiation cluster and stressed that the authorities must continue to work harder and faster, in order to open all other clusters.

“I welcome you to Brussels for the second EU–Moldova Summit. I congratulate you on the work you have done. Last week, we opened negotiations on the first cluster. Now we must work harder and faster to open all the other clusters, because for us the main priority is enlargement towards Moldova and, of course, no one doubts that you deserve to get accession to the European Union as soon as possible. We have overcome the political blockages, and from now on it is only about hard work,” António Costa said.

The Moldova – European Union Summit is a high-level dialogue format established by both sides and reflects the increasingly close partnership between Moldova and the EU, as well as the firm commitment to the country’s accession to the European bloc. This year’s meeting takes place one week after the official opening of accession negotiations on the first cluster of chapters, “Fundamental Values,” marking a new stage on the country’s European path.

During the summit, leaders will discuss the next steps in the negotiations and Moldova’s reform agenda. Both the European Commission and the European Council have confirmed that Moldova is ready for the opening of negotiations on all clusters of chapters, as provided by the merit-based accession process, the Presidency of Moldova said in a press release.

The summit's agenda will also include topics regarding the regional situation, strengthening cooperation in the fields of security, defence and energy, as well as EU support for the economic development of Moldova.

At the end of the meeting, joint press statements are planned to be delivered by Maia Sandu, Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa.

The Brussels Summit is the second of its kind between Moldova and the European Union. The first high-level meeting took place in Chisinau on July 4, 2025.
