Environment Ministry announces increase in releases from Dubăsari reservoir to 85 cubic meters per second

Water releases from Dubăsari reservoir will be increased on Friday, October 30, to 80–85 cubic meters per second, up from 45–50 cubic meters per second recorded in recent days. The measure will contribute to an increase in water levels downstream of the reservoir, toward southern Moldova, in the coming days, Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder announced.

According to the official, the water level in Dubăsari reservoir has risen by 37 centimeters over the past two weeks, due to the increased water flow from Ukraine and precipitation recorded in the northern part of the country.

The minister noted that the required water flow is currently ensured, but authorities are seeking to build up the largest possible reserves for the coming period. The Dubăsari reservoir has a smaller capacity than the one at Novodnistrovsk and fills up more quickly, but its reserves can also decline rapidly if the water needs to be used, Hajder said.

As for Novodnistrovsk reservoir, releases toward Moldova have remained at 55–60 cubic meters per second over the past two weeks, practically equal to the volume of water entering the reservoir.

The water level in this reservoir rose by only 20 centimeters during October, with the surplus being immediately directed toward Moldova. Currently, the level stands at 111.17 meters, compared with the normal level of approximately 121.5 meters.

Gheorghe Hajder said that water accumulation in Dniester River basin in the coming days will depend directly on precipitation in the upper reaches of the river, in western Ukraine.
