Incident in south-east Moldova district during farmers’ protests: MP allegedly deliberately blocks road, hits police officer with tractor
The General Police Inspectorate (IGP) is investigating an incident, in which MP Sergiu Stefanco allegedly deliberately blocked a road with a tractor, refusing to comply with the lawful requests of law-enforcement officers. Subsequently, he allegedly started the vehicle and hit a police officer with the tractor wheel.
According to the IGP, the incident was recorded in Stefan Voda district today, during police intervention in a case involving the blocking of the roadway.
“All circumstances of the incident are being investigated and the actions of the individual will be examined in light of the legislation in force. The police remind that failure to comply with lawful orders of police officers, as well as any action that endangers their life or physical integrity entails liability as provided by law,” the IGP said.
In the context, the institution reiterates its call to respect the lawful requirements of the authorities and to avoid any actions that run counter to the law.
The road traffic on more national routes and nearby certain border crossing points is blocked today, in the context of protests organized by farmers. At present, the police are monitoring the situation on the ground and directing road traffic.
Farmers from more settlements of Moldova have taken to the streets in protest on June 24 and 25, expressing dissatisfaction, including with certain provisions in the draft tax policy for next year. The Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry has announced that it was engaged in discussions with sector’s representatives, in order to analyze the new tax policy draft and formulate a consolidated position on finalizing the provisions that concern the activities of entrepreneurs from the sector.
