Minimum pension increased by 2.5 times to 3,055 lei over past four years
Over the past four years, the minimum pension for individuals with a full contribution period has increased by 157%, or two and a half times, from 1,188 lei in 2021 to 3,055 lei in 2025. Prime Minister Dorin Recean unveiled the data after today's cabinet meeting, during which the project concerning the 10% indexation of pensions from 1 April was approved.
“As announced by head of state Maia Sandu, the government and parliament have ensured this 10% indexation of pensions. I would point out that since 2021 we have managed to increase the minimum pension from 1,188 lei to 3,055 lei in 2025. It is an unprecedented increase. We know and understand that it is still insufficient, we still have work to do, we are aware that incomes are low, but I would like to highlight that we have increased this pension by at least 150%, two and a half times,” stated Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
He said that the funds necessary for the additional pension indexation are within the budget.
“The Government identifies additional financial means, then allocates them for various projects, whether economic or social. In this case, the funds are in the budget, and the Government is allocating them to index pensions by 10%. This additional indexation of pensions will cost approximately 2.4 billion lei,” mentioned Dorin Recean.
Today, the government approved the initiative to index pensions by 10% starting April 1, in order to improve the welfare and social protection of elderly people in the Republic of Moldova.
“We have many elderly people who have worked all their lives but have quite low pensions, and we have set as an objective to correct this inequity and provide as much support as possible to pensioners. I am glad that from 2021 until now, we managed to increase the minimum pension from 1,188 lei to 3,055 lei, and we will continue to work in this direction,” Minister of Labor and Social Protection Alexei Buzu said.
The 10% indexation will apply to all types of pensions. The indexation coefficient will be applied only to the part of the pension that does not exceed the average monthly salary on the economy, expected for the current year to be 16,100 lei.
Thus, the average pension will increase to 4,407 lei, and the minimum pension for a complete contribution period will increase to 3,055 lei.
The draft law on the indexation of pensions from 1 April 2025 was voted in the first reading and is expected to be examined by Parliament in the second reading.
President Maia Sandu promulgated amendments to the Public Pension System Law to increase the minimum pension for individuals who have contributed to the social insurance system for at least 40 years. Starting in May, this category of pensioners will benefit from a guaranteed minimum pension of 3,300 lei.
