Moldovan Justice Ministry continues modernization of penitentiary system: new prison to be built by 2029
The construction of a new penitentiary is planned to be completed by the end of 2028, with the institution to become operational in 2029. Justice Minister Vladislav Cojuhari has made statements to this effect in an exclusive interview given with MOLDPRES.
According to the cited source, the project is part of the effort to modernize the entire penitentiary system of Moldova in line with European standards, and aims both to ensure respect for human rights and to enhance the safety and efficiency of the detention institutions.
The minister noted that the project benefited from the support of the United Nations Office for Project Services, which provides expertise in the management of investments and procurement.
“In 2025, the stage of assessing compliance with the European Prison Rules was completed, and the next stage will focus on launching procurement procedures and effectively starting the construction. The construction of the penitentiary is planned to be completed by the end of 2028, with the institution to become operational in 2029,” the minister said.
The justice minister emphasized that the focus would be on quality, sustainability and compliance with international standards, so that the new penitentiary meets both the needs of the system and the expectations of society.
