The first batch of steel deck segments, the structural element that will support the roadway of the “Bridge of Flowers” in Ungheni, has arrived at the construction site on the Moldovan bank, marking a new stage in the construction of the bridge over the Prut River. On the coming period, another four deck sections will be transported and unloaded in ten special runs.
According to the authorities, works are progressing simultaneously on both banks of the Prut. So far, piling works have been completed, as well as the construction of the bridge abutments and piers, and on the Romanian side the installation of the steel deck has already started.
The new road bridge in Ungheni will be 261 meters long and will provide a direct connection of Moldova to the Union Highway (A8) and the European transport network. The physical progress of the works has reached almost 50 per cent, and the opening to traffic is scheduled for the next autumn.
The construction of the “Bridge of Flowers” began on 26 April 2025, during a symbolic event held 35 years after the historic “Bridge of Flowers” of 1990, when citizens on both sides of the Prut were able to cross the border freely for the first time after decades of separation. The name of the bridge refers to that emblematic moment of rapprochement between Moldova and Romania.
The project has an estimated value of around 33 million euros and is financed from European funds through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF).
The bridge is being built in cooperation between the authorities of Moldova and Romania and is the first new bridge constructed over the Prut in the last six decades. The project is considered strategic for regional infrastructure and for connecting Moldova to the European transport corridors.
