New record for air transport in Moldova: Chisinau-based Eugen Doga International Airport reaches figure of five million passengers

The Eugen Doga International Airport from Chisinau today marked, through a special event, the milestone of five million passengers served.

The 5,000,000th passenger arrived at noon today at the airport, traveling on the Frankfurt–Chisinau route. The lucky woman lives abroad and came home to surprise her grandmother. She was symbolically awarded with a suitcase and two flight tickets.

The Infrastructure and Regional Development Ministry highlighted that reaching the five million passenger threshold in 2025 represented a new record for the air transport of Moldova.

“This achievement is the result of investments made in recent years in modernizing airport infrastructure, expanding the network of destinations and strengthening collaboration with airline operators. At the same time, the success is due to the professionalism of the airport’s team and the growing confidence of passengers who choose to fly to and from Chisinau. The airport thus becomes a modern and competitive regional hub,” stated MIDR.

Sergiu Spoiala, the administrator of Eugen Doga International Airport from Chisinau, said that reaching the five million passenger milestone was not just a statistical achievement, but a milestone that shows the airport is growing with the people and their dreams.

“Every plane that takes off carries a part of us – the work of our teams, the passion of partners and the hospitality that defines us. And each time a passenger chooses to fly from Chisinau, he/she chooses, in fact, to put his/her trust in us. Thank you!” noted Sergiu Spoiala.

The Eugen Doga International Airport of Chisinau returned to state management in the spring of 2023. Authorities previously announced the modernization of airport’s infrastructure and the attraction of investments to enhance the capacity and quality of services, in a state-managed, transparent and public-interest-oriented regime.

Presently, the Chisinau Airport ranks among the most efficient airports in Europe in the category of 1–10 million passengers per year. The growth is supported by the expansion of the route network and the number of airline companies, which increased from 20 in 2022 to 33 in 2024.
