Two Ukrainian border guards detained after illegally crossing Moldova’s border near Vasilcău

Two employees of Ukraine’s State Border Guard Service were detained on Saturday, October 17, by a patrol of the Border Police of the Republic of Moldova near the village of Vasilcău, Soroca district. Criminal proceedings have been initiated in connection with the illegal crossing of the state border.

According to preliminary information, the two Ukrainian border guards were carrying out their official duties and conducting an operation to detain a Ukrainian citizen on the Dniester River, near the Moldovan bank.

The Ukrainian citizen targeted in the operation requested asylum in the Republic of Moldova, and his application will be examined in accordance with legal procedures.

The two border guards were taken to the headquarters of the Soroca Border Police Sector for the application of legal procedures.

Criminal proceedings were initiated on suspicion of committing the offense of illegally crossing the state border, provided for under Article 362 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Moldova.

The exact circumstances of the incident are to be established during the investigation.
