Moldovan interior minister meets new U.S. Ambassador to Moldova

Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin today met new Ambassador of the United States to Moldova Joseph Mark Burkhalter. The discussions focused on institutional priorities and identifying solutions to respond more effectively to current security challenges.

Daniella Misail-Nichitin said that the United States was an important partner of Moldova and thanked it for the support provided over the years to institutions subordinate to the Interior Ministry (MAI).

“An important topic we discussed was the security of the country’s borders. We need modern technologies, equipment and expertise, in order to prevent the illegal trafficking of weapons and drugs. We also discussed the needs of the National Police in investigating cross-border crimes, financial fraud and cybercrime. Access to modern digital evidence analysis tools, information sharing and specialized training can help police investigate these cases more effectively,” the minister said.

The official emphasized that another priority was improving the services of the General Inspectorate for Migration, so that foreign citizens can more easily access the services they need, while the country’s institutions can identify and manage the security risks associated with migration.

“The United States has helped us better prepare for current threats and protect people. I thank Ambassador Joseph Mark Burkhalter for his openness and dialogue. We want the support of our American partners to translate into stronger capabilities for the institutions of the Interior Ministry and, above all, greater safety for our citizens,” Daniella Misail-Nichitin said.

Over the years, the United States has supported the modernization of institutions subordinate to the MAI through donations of technical equipment, vehicles and technologies for border security, as well as through training programmes and technical assistance. The cooperation aims to strengthen capacities, in order to prevent and combat crime and manage security threats.
