Moldova's National Police to benefit from new cooperation project with Germany; initiative aims to strengthen operational, investigative capacities

The General Police Inspectorate (IGP) will benefit from a new cooperation project with Germany, aimed at strengthening operational and investigative capacities. The subject today was discussed by the leadership of the National Police at a meeting with a delegation from Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), led by Director Holger Münch.

The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, developing the operational and investigative capacities of the National Police and identifying joint solutions to combat cross-border crime.

During the meeting, IGP Chief Viorel Cernauteanu praised Germany’s continued support for the modernization and development of the institution.

“It is a privilege for the National Police that you have chosen Moldova as the first destination of your regional working visit. This presence reconfirms the constant interest and commitment of German partners to the development and modernization of Moldova’s Police,” Viorel Cernauteanu said.

Over the years, the cooperation between the IGP and the BKA has contributed to the development of forensic expertise, the provision of specialized equipment to operational units and the professional training of National Police employees.

In the context of the current regional security situation, the sides addressed the main challenges faced by law enforcement authorities, as well as the need to strengthen capacities, in order to prevent and combat threats to public security.

An important moment of the meeting was the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent on the implementation of a cooperation project between the IGP and the BKA, with the support of the Federal Government of Germany, for the period 2026–2027. The project aims to strengthen the operational, technical and investigative capacities of the police.

The parties also discussed priorities for cooperation during the next period, with a view to developing modern and effective tools to combat crime.

“We extend our sincere thanks to the Federal Government of Germany for its continued support for Moldova. Our common goal is for every citizen to feel safe, both at home and in their community,” the IGP chief noted.

The cooperation between the IGP and the BKA contributes to the development of modern and sustainable capacities compatible with European standards in the field of investigations and police cooperation. By strengthening international partnerships, the IGP reaffirms its commitment to preventing and combating crime, contributing to the safety of citizens and the security of the European space.
