New tool for searching for missing persons; Moldovan government approves creation of facial images registry
Police will have a new modern tool for investigating crimes and searching for missing persons. The government today approved the creation of the Facial Images Registry, which will enable the automated comparison of images and faster identification of individuals in cases provided for by law, including through cooperation with authorities of other states.
Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin emphasized that rapid access to information was essential in cases involving missing persons or the identification of suspects.
“To enable the police to act more quickly in such cases, we are proposing the creation of the Facial Images Registry. Access to the data will be strictly controlled, while the results of comparisons will be mandatorily verified by qualified personnel, in order to prevent misidentifications and the misuse of information. Through this project, we are providing the police with a modern tool for investigating crimes and searching for missing persons, while respecting fundamental rights and personal data protection regulations,” the official said.
At the same time, thanks to this mechanism, citizens will benefit from an increased level of public safety and a more effective response from the authorities in cases involving crimes and missing persons.
