Nicolae Testemitanu Medical University of Moldova national leader in international SCImago ranking
The Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy of Moldova (USMF) ranked first at the national level at the 2025 edition of the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR), one of the best-known international evaluations of universities and research institutes.
According to the data published, the institution appears in the ranking alongside three other universities from Moldova and holds the 2751st position globally out of 5,051 universities, and the 168th place in Eastern Europe out of a total of 476 institutions included.
In the ranking dedicated to medical-profile universities, USMF is placed 2,286th worldwide and 129th in Eastern Europe.
In the global SCImago ranking of institutions in the medicine field, the university is positioned 4701st out of 5,633, and 213th in the region.
The best positions were recorded in the fields of Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology – 3,919th place globally and 167th in Eastern Europe; Medicine – 4,700th place globally and 213th in Eastern Europe; Pharmacology, Toxicology and Pharmaceutics – 3,376th place globally and 197th in Eastern Europe.
SCImago evaluates institutions based on an indicator that includes research performance (50 per cent), innovation (30 per cent) and societal impact (20 per cent), the latter criterion being measured through online visibility.
In the overall ranking, USMF Nicolae Testemitanu holds the 6,402nd place worldwide out of 9,756 institutions evaluated and 276th place in Eastern Europe. At national level, it is followed by the Academy of Sciences of Moldova, the Technical University of Moldova and Moldova State University.
At the same time, in the research ranking, the university is on the 5,924th place worldwide, 408th in Eastern Europe and first place nationally. In the innovation ranking, USMF holds the 6,542nd position worldwide and 289th in the region, once again ranking first in the country.
Also, in the societal ranking, the institution advances by 124 positions worldwide, reaching the 5,187th place globally, 233rd in Eastern Europe and first place nationally, this criterion referring to web visibility and mentions on social networks.
