Greater fairness in social protection system of Moldova: maternity allowance to no longer depend on parents’ marital status
The maternity allowance will no longer depend on parents’ marital status. The decision was approved today, in order to apply the principle of equal treatment between women and men in the field of social security.
Presently, an uninsured woman can receive a maternity allowance calculated based on her husband’s insured income. However, the same possibility is not provided for unmarried women, even if the child’s father is insured and assumes parental responsibilities.
Thus, the maternity allowance will also be able to be calculated based on the insured income of the child’s father, regardless of the parents’ marital status, provided that he acknowledges paternity.
According to data from the Public Services Agency, approximately 19 per cent of children are born outside marriage. The proposed amendments will help reduce the financial vulnerability of families during the maternity period and protect the well-being of the child.
