Risk of power outages during peak hours

The Republic of Moldova is facing a significant electricity deficit during peak hours, and the authorities are warning about a real risk of temporary disconnections. According to data presented by Energocom, the problem is caused by insufficient import capacity available to cover consumption.

According to the authorities, the deficit is expected especially between 18:00 and 22:00, when electricity consumption reaches its highest levels. Under these conditions, in order to maintain the balance of the power system, controlled interruptions of electricity supply may be applied.

The authorities have issued an appeal to all categories of consumers – citizens, public institutions, and economic agents – to reduce consumption, especially during the critical time intervals 06:00–09:00 and 17:00–23:00.

According to the cited source, essential services and critical infrastructure will be supplied with priority, in order to ensure the continuous operation of vital institutions. In contrast, non-essential consumption will depend on the level of responsibility and cooperation of each consumer.

Thus, citizens are encouraged to use electricity rationally and to avoid using elevators during peak hours, in order to prevent being trapped in case of fluctuations. It is also recommended to limit the use of escalators and to prepare for possible temporary interruptions, including by securing alternative lighting sources and charging mobile devices.

At the same time, enterprises with high energy consumption are encouraged to reorganize their activity outside peak hours, and administrators of public and commercial buildings are required to reduce indoor lighting by at least 30% and to disconnect shop windows and advertising lighting.

Citizens are urged to take basic preparedness measures for possible temporary power outages, including securing alternative lighting sources, charging mobile devices, and avoiding the use of electrical equipment and elevators under such risk conditions.
