Mayors for Europe platform launched in Moldovan capital

The mayors of Ungheni, Comrat, and Sireti today came up with an initiative to create the Mayors for Europe platform, advocating for public responsibility, unity, cohesion, integrity and the European future of Moldova.

‘’The European integration is not just a political slogan; it is a path we are already experiencing, day by day, in our communities, through better roads, modernized schools and kindergartens, through parks and playgrounds for children, through endowed hospitals, through sports infrastructure and more efficient public services. The European Union is not about words; it is about results, results that people feel directly in their quality of life. Moldova has developed and modernized through hundreds of European projects. We have shown that, when we are united and perseverant, we can attract funds, change realities and build villages and towns where people can live with dignity. For these transformations to continue, we need unity, cohesion and integrity, perhaps more than ever,’’ said Vitalie Vrabie, mayor of the Ungheni municipality.

The mayor emphasized that the message represents much of the people of Ungheni, as residents of a city on the EU border.

‘’I have been in the office of mayor for 10 years. At the forefront, I have a city development program and I have seen that, without projects, without the support of the European Union, we cannot develop the city. In the last 5-6 years, the city has developed a lot. Many changes have occurred. That is why, we all go together, we want to develop the city further. I believe we have reached a time when we must move forward. Europe is our family and we must develop and be together with other European countries,’’ the mayor of the Comrat municipality, Serghei Anastasov, said.

According to the mayor of the Sireti village, central Straseni district, Leonid Boaghe, the country is at a crossroads and all mayors must choose the European vector which is Moldova's future and must be built together.

‘’We promote the civic platform, Mayors for Europe. This is a direction and a necessity, a project, a vision for the country under which we can all associate. We urge all mayors to follow our example, to follow our goal and together to work towards a direction in which we all go together. Our ship is called Moldova and we must head in one direction. Obviously and certainly, 100% our direction is towards the European Union,’’ said Leonid Boaghe.

The three mayors signed the resolution for the establishment of the Mayors for Europe platform, an initiative that aims to provide a unified voice for local administrations in support of European projects and sustainable development.

Presently, about 900 mayoralties operate in Moldova and the new platform is open to all local authorities interested in contributing to the modernization of communities and bringing the country closer to the European Union.
