Chisinau, 10 April /MOLDPRES/- The Constitutional Court of Moldova today decided to amend the Articles 50 and 51 of the Constitution. Following the court’s ruling, the term “disabled” will be changed to “persons with disabilities”.
The court magistrates today approved the legislative initiative of 38 Democratic MPs amending the Supreme Law.
According to the Democratic MPs, the draft aims to protect, ensure and promote equality in the full exercise of the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons with disabilities, as well as respect for their dignity.
Basis for drafting the legislative initiative was the report by ombudsman and the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which states that it is essential to prohibit all types of disability discrimination.
“It is necessary to adjust to international standards and not allow these persons to be discriminated, nor in terms of law or by society,” Democratic MP Sergiu Sirbu said.
The court’s decision is final, and cannot be subject to any appeal, shall enter into force upon adoption and shall be published in the Official Journal of Moldova.
