The Republic of Moldova has won first medals at European U-17 Wrestling Championships, held in the city of Samokov, Bulgaria, after Moldovan athletes claimed two bronze medals in the Greco-Roman wrestling events.
According to the Ministry of Education and Research, the first medal was obtained by wrestler Vadim Țarelunga in the up to 51 kg category. He defeated Poland’s Oliwier M. Bialasek in the bronze-medal bout with a score of 6-1. Over the course of the competition, he also defeated Hungary’s Sandor Daniel Kurdi, 8-0, and Greece’s Georgios Chondronasios, 9-5.
Vadim Țarelunga is also a bronze medalist at last year’s U-17 World Championships.
The second bronze medal for the Republic of Moldova was won by Vlad Duminică in the 60 kg category. In the match for third place, he convincingly defeated Croatia’s David Koic with a score of 10-1.
On his way to the podium, Vlad Duminică overcame Romania’s Alexandru Ilie-Lungu, 6-2, the Czech Republic’s Simon Sebecek, 4-3, and in the repechage he defeated Azerbaijan’s Elmir Charkazov, 8-0.
Two other representatives of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Codimschi and Vladislav Vasilevschi, finished fifth in the 45 kg and 92 kg categories respectively, narrowly missing the podium.
The 2026 European U-17 Wrestling Championships are taking place in Samokov, Bulgaria, from 11 to 17 May, bringing together young wrestlers in Greco-Roman, freestyle and women’s wrestling.
