Historic cobblestone on 31 August street of Chisinau to be rehabilitated in 2026

The historic cobblestone on 31 August 1989 Street, on the segment between Alexandr Pushkin Street and Metropolitan Gavriil Banulescu-Bodoni Street, will be rehabilitated this year. The Chisinau city hall today presented the rehabilitation project, estimated at 33 million lei, with the works expected to last approximately six months after the completion of the tender procedure and on-site mobilization.

“Today we are presenting the final version of the rehabilitation project for 31 August Street, on the segment between Alexandr Pushkin and Banulescu-Bodoni streets. The street was rehabilitated and the works were completed, being put into operation two and a half years ago. Since then, we have been looking for solutions for the section that was to be rehabilitated by the Chisinau city hall. The city hall has neither delayed nor blocked this project. We have acted strictly within the limits of the law. The historic cobblestone is proposed to be preserved and conserved,” said the mayor of Chisinau, Ion Ceban.

At the same time, the mayor noted that the next step involved launching a public and transparent tender for awarding the contract, after which the rehabilitation works could begin and will be carried out over a period of approximately six months.

“In the first two decades of March, the public and transparent procurement procedure is to be launched. The estimated amount allocated for the rehabilitation is 33 million lei, according to the cost estimate. Only a portion of the cobblestone will be modified, which will be removed from the alternative transport lane, in order to complete the area where it is missing. At the same time, cobblestone segments previously removed will be used to complete other portions. If there are no appeals, the tender procedure will last a little over one month. The entire amount for rehabilitating this section is included in this year’s budget. The approximate duration of the works, after the tender is completed and on-site mobilization is done, is about six months,” the mayor said.

According to Ion Ceban, the municipality has sent official letters to the government, requesting intervention in the areas managed by central authorities, so that the entire zone between Alexandr Pushkin and Banulescu-Bodoni streets can be rehabilitated. One of these areas is nearby the Nicolae Sulac National Palace, where the municipality cannot legally intervene.

The historic cobblestone on 31 August Street of Chisinau was discovered during the rehabilitation works on the road segment, when workers uncovered the old pavement preserved under layers of asphalt. The discovery reignited discussions on the need to preserve historical elements of urban infrastructure and integrate them into the area’s modernization project.
