Moldovan winemakers captivated Benelux audience at Rotterdam Gastvrij exhibition
The Republic of Moldova made its presence felt on the international wine scene in Rotterdam, where 15 local wineries represented the country at the end of September, in front of over 20,000 visitors and 600 professionals from the wine industry in Benelux region.
For three days, Moldovan wines managed to capture attention through quality, diversity and authenticity.
“For many visitors, it was their first encounter with our native varieties and the stories behind each bottle, which piqued curiosity and left a strong impression. Barrel-aged wines and author collections were among the most appreciated, and industry professionals noted Moldova's distinct potential in the international market. Many of those present expressed interest in future collaborations with local producers, thus confirming the growing recognition of Moldovan wine globally,” explains the National Vine and Wine Office (ONVV).
According to ONVV, participating in Rotterdam Gastvrij event strengthened Moldova's image as a country with authentic winemaking traditions and competitive wines in European markets.
“At the same time, our winemakers had the opportunity to establish new business contacts and promote their brands to a demanding and knowledgeable audience. Thus, the Republic of Moldova continues to show that wine is not only an export product with economic value but also a cultural ambassador that opens doors and builds bridges between people and countries,” the quoted source summarizes.
Winemakers from the Republic of Moldova are recording significant progress year after year in international markets, thanks to active participation in specialized exhibitions and fairs. The constant presence of Moldovan wineries at major international events like ProWein (Germany), London Wine Fair (UK), Vinitaly (Italy), or Rotterdam Gastvrij (Netherlands) has contributed to strengthening Moldova's image as a reference wine country in Eastern Europe.
In recent years, Moldovan wines have won over 5,000 medals at international competitions, including prestigious events like Decanter World Wine Awards, Mundus Vini, and Concours Mondial de Bruxelles. Participation in exhibitions has facilitated access to new markets, including in Western Europe, Asia, and North America. Local wines have managed to capture attention due to unique local varieties – Feteasca Albă, Feteasca Neagră, Rara Neagră, Viorica – which are increasingly appreciated for authenticity and quality.
Exports of Moldovan wine exceeded 150 million liters in 2024, being delivered to over 65 countries. Winemakers have strengthened their reputation through quality, innovation, and competitive branding, and more small and medium-sized companies are entering the international market. Participation in B2B exhibitions provides opportunities for direct commercial contracts, attracting renowned importers, distributors, and sommeliers.
