Large wind farms with energy storage systems to be built in Moldova: 16 bids submitted in tender
A total of 16 bids have been submitted in the tender for the construction of wind power plants with a total capacity of 170 MW, which will, for the first time, include mandatory installation of energy storage systems of 44 MWh.
The tender commission for granting the status of large eligible producer (2025–2026) held a meeting to open the applications and assess the admissibility of investors.
According to data by the Energy Ministry, the number of bids submitted in this procedure, namely 16, is twice as high compared to the similar tender held for the 2024–2025 period, which highlights the strong interest of investors in developing renewable energy in Moldova.
The total capacity proposed by investors reaches 423.85 MW, while the energy storage capacity amounts to 305.29 MWh – figures that significantly exceed the parameters put out to tender.
The Commission’s meeting was held in the presence of observers on behalf of the civil society and the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova, ensuring the transparency of the process.
The Commission ruled to temporarily suspend the meeting, in order to request additional information necessary for the evaluation of the bids. The examination of applications will be resumed after the responses are received, and investors will be informed in advance about the date, time and place for the continuation of the procedure.
The tender was launched in mid-December 2025 and is the second initiated by Moldova for the construction of large-capacity plants for the production of electricity from renewable sources. This is a first for Moldova, due to the inclusion of the storage component. Estimates by the Energy Ministry show that the implementation of the tenders will contribute to increasing the share of renewable energy by 5.8 per cent in achieving the national target of 30 per cent energy from renewable sources by 2030.
Statistics data presented today by the National Center for Sustainable Energy shows that Moldova has exceeded the threshold of 1 GW (gigawatt) of installed capacity from renewable energy sources, reaching 1,023.42 MW, with an increase of about 69 per cent in a single year. At the same time, in the last five years, installed capacities have grown by a factor of 13.23.
