ASD Head: Funds from road bridge over Prut to allow us better maintain other roads in country
Start of the work on the bridge over the Prut is much more than an infrastructure project; it symbolizes Moldova's development and rapprochement with the European Union, says Sergiu Bejan, director-general of the State Road Administration (ASD).
ASD head pointed out the importance of the event, which charts both physically and symbolically the path toward a better-connected Moldova.
Sergiu Bejan: This is a landmark project that will have a major impact on mobility, economy and quality of life of citizens. It is a heartfelt project for all Romanians everywhere.
It is a work that marks the beginning of a future highway, a project for generations, the entire European continent, fraternity, our Romanian identity, economic development, social development, as well as numerous facilities that such a construction can provide for the development of a country.
The profit will amount to hundreds of millions of lei annually. The resources from this highway will allow us to better maintain the other roads in the country. The highway will take on more traffic, especially heavy traffic. Additionally, alongside this motorway, all nearby localities will develop. It also involves a different kind of development for maintenance works, as a highway involves other types of operations. This is a substantial leap for road infrastructure.
On 26 April 2025, the construction of the first road bridge over the Prut River in the last six decades was officially launched at Podul de Flori 2025 event, held in Ungheni. The event brought together representatives of the Government of the Republic of Moldova and Romanian authorities, local officials, international partners, and thousands of citizens from both countries to mark both a historic moment of collaboration and a concrete step toward improving connectivity between the Republic of Moldova and the European Union. The Ungheni-Ungheni Bridge will be part of the Union Highway and will directly connect the road networks of the Republic of Moldova and Romania. The project holds a strategic significance for regional infrastructure development, facilitating the transport of goods and people and supporting cross-border trade.
