Energy minister says Moldova achieved deep transformation of energy sector in several years
Moldova in recent years has undergone a deep transformation of its energy sector, and the year 2025 marks a turning point in this field for the country. From being almost entirely dependent on a single gas source, a single supplier, and one supply corridor, we've reached today a much more open, interconnected, modern and secure market. Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu today made statements to this effect while unveiling the results achieved during his mandate in the government led by Dorin Recean.
"In 2021, just four years ago, Moldova was vulnerable, constantly threatened with the shutdown of gas supplies and under the pressure of Russian energy blackmail. Today, in 2025, we can say with certainty that Moldova can no longer be blackmailed by shutting off gas. We are no longer prisoners of a single supplier, nor do we depend on unpredictable external decisions," said Dorin Junghietu.
The minister noted that Moldova had achieved what seemed impossible: full diversification of supply sources. According to him, while until 2022 the entire market was controlled by Gazprom, at present, Moldova sources from over 10 different sources from reliable European suppliers, and Romania, the largest gas producer in Europe, is our main gas supplier. Since September 2022, on the right bank of the Dniester River, we no longer consume Russian gas, and as of January 2025, neither the left bank, the official noted.
"Through contracts signed by state company Energocom, Moldova receives gas purchased from the stock exchange or based on long-term agreements that guarantee stable and predictable prices for consumers. In addition, our gas exchange is already operating, meaning full transparency and real competition on the market," the energy minister informed.
An extremely important step, taken for the first time, is, according to the minister, the designation of the state company Energocom as a public service obligation supplier for a period of three years. Thus, Energocom has taken over approximately 830,000 final consumers, who have been earlier served by Moldovagaz company. Dorin Junghietu said that this decision strengthened the country's energy security.
The minister also referred to the crises that marked the year 2025. "In January 2025, the Transnistrian region faced a critical situation after Gazprom had stopped gas deliveries. Thanks to the quick intervention of the government, which did everything possible to maintain peace on both banks of Dniester and the generous support of the European Union, we avoided a humanitarian crisis. We proved that we can manage a complex situation without yielding to blackmail and without leaving people in the cold and dark," the minister stated. The official noted, in the context, that the support amounting to 60 million euros proposed by the European Union for the Transnistrian region, meant for the procurement of energy resources, stayed valid.
Minister Junghietu emphasized that Moldova enters this winter with replenished gas stocks, and energy interconnection projects with Romania and the EU market were advancing. Thus, the Vulcanesti-Chisinau Energy Independence Line has reached a 90-per cent completion level, and the minister assured that it would be commissioned on schedule, by the end of this year.
At the same time, the interconnection projects Straseni-Gutinas and Balti-Suceava are expected to allow the import and export of larger quantities of electricity. The Balti-Suceava power line is in the tender phase for contracting construction companies; it is scheduled to be completed by 2027. For the construction of the Straseni-Gutinas Line, the United States Government has approved an initiative for full funding amounting to 130 million dollars.
Dorin Junghietu also said that 2025 was a year of green transition, as Moldova is achieving remarkable progress in renewable energy.
"We have made great strides to transform Moldova into a cleaner, more modern, greener from the energy viewpoint and more developed country. Each installed megawatt of renewable energy is a soldier guarding our independence and energy security. Today, we have over 850 megawatts from renewable sources, almost four times more than three years ago. In August 2025, we also set an absolute historic record. At noon on August 23, for the first time in the history of Moldova, the internal electricity consumption was practically fully covered from renewable sources," the minister said.
The official also highlighted progress in the field of energy efficiency, referencing projects worth hundreds of millions of euros, targeting the rehabilitation of public buildings, schools, hospitals and homes throughout the country. As a result, hundreds of schools, hospitals and homes will be thermally rehabilitated, thousands of households will produce cleaner energy and tens of thousands of families will be able to reduce their energy consumption, pay smaller invoices and live in more comfortable conditions.
"The year 2025 has confirmed that Moldova is on the irreversible path of energy transformation. We have learned to turn crises into opportunities, vulnerabilities into solutions and projects into concrete achievements. Today, we can proudly say that each meter of pipeline built, every solar panel mounted, every wind turbine erected means more than infrastructure. It means freedom, dignity and economic growth. We have succeeded in bringing Moldova closer to the European energy market, freeing it from monopolistic dependency, implementing clear and fair rules for all suppliers and creating a stable and predictable investment framework. We have proved that we can be a reliable partner and an example of resilience in the region," the minister pointed out.
Asked whether he will be part of the new government, Dorin Junghietu said that "he has started many important things at the ministry and would like to see them continued and completed."
"The new government will continue the path of deep changes and will accelerate the integration of Moldova into the European energy system. It will continue to build partnerships, attract investments, diversify supply sources and modernize infrastructure, so that energy becomes not only an engine of the economy, but also a symbol of our national stability and dignity. I am convinced that Moldova will become, in the coming years, a solid pillar of the regional energy architecture," the official concluded.
Dorin Junghietu was appointed energy minister in last February.
