Nicolae Testemitanu Medical University of Moldova awards honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa to professor, president of Romania's National Council of Rectors

The Nicolae Testemitanu State University of Medicine and Pharmacy (USMF) today awarded the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa to Professor Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu, Doctor of Agronomic Sciences, President of the National Council of Rectors of Romania, Rector of the Bucharest-based University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine. The ceremony took place in the context of events marking 80th anniversary of the foundation of USMF Nicolae Testemitanu.

USMF Rector Emil Ceban emphasized that the honorary title had been conferred in deep gratitude and high appreciation for Professor Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu's remarkable contribution to promoting international cooperation between universities and strengthening academic partnerships between higher education institutions of Moldova and Romania.

‘’Professor Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu has always supported the exchange of best practices, university mobility and aligning educational systems to European standards of quality and performance. He has published more than 18 books, various chapters, manuals, 114 scientific articles in management, led 31 projects as a rector or project manager, including 10 at the international level, and served as a member or consultant expert in another 60 research, training, and infrastructure projects. In his 34 years of teaching and research activity, Professor, Doctor, Rector Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu has distinguished himself as one of the most competitive and active Romanian researchers in the fields of agronomy and biotechnologies. Through his scientific personality, coupled with exceptional human and moral qualities, through his entire academic-scientific, managerial and political activity, the academician professor has proved that he is a visionary and pioneer for higher education of Moldova. We believe that, through his national and international activity, through his considerable contribution and promotion of collaborative relations between the National Council of Rectors of Romania, the Council of Rectors of Moldova and USMF Nicolae Testemitanu, Mr. Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu deserves the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa of our educational institution,’’ said Emil Ceban.

Professor Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu also expressed his gratitude for being awarded the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa, in the context of the beautiful events dedicated to marking 80 years since the founding of USMF Nicolae Testemitanu.

‘’I want to thank you once again for this great honor, which obliges me to support even more the universities of Moldova. It is the first time I receive this honorary title in the presence of the rectors of 56 universities from Romania, along with representatives of universities from Moldova, ministers and important guests from the two countries,’’ emphasized Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu.

Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu was born in Bucharest, Romania, on April 18, 1968. Throughout his career, he has held more important positions in educational institutions from beyond the Prut River. Since 2012, the professor has been a corresponding member of the Technical Sciences Academy of Romania, a corresponding member of the Academy of Agricultural and Forestry Sciences, as well as the General Secretary of the National Council for the Attestation of University Titles, Diplomas and Certificates, and since 2013, the President of the National Council of Rectors in Romania. Since 2017, Sorin Mihai Cîmpeanu has also been the President of the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie, the largest academic organization worldwide, bringing together over 1,000 universities from 120 countries. As of 2024, he has been member of the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie Bureau.
