LIVE TEXT // Consultations at Presidency for nomination of Prime Minister candidate

President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu has begun consultations with parliamentary factions and groups regarding the nomination of the candidate for the position of Prime Minister, following the establishment of the XIIth Legislature Parliament.

Update 13:20 The first to consultations was the leader of the Democracy at home party, Vasile Costiuc. He mentioned that his faction does not have a candidate for the position of Prime Minister and will not support the candidate proposed by PAS.

"We understand that this discussion is about the prime minister proposed by them. We do not have any candidate proposal. What we believe is one thing, what will happen in reality, we will see," stated Costiuc.

After consultations, he said he is "in disagreement with how the future prime minister was forwarded".

According to the Presidency, on 23 October, representatives from the Democracy at Home Party, Our Party, Political Bloc Alternative, the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova and the Socialist Party of the Republic of Moldova are expected for consultations.

On Friday, the majority faction of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) will attend consultations.

The consultations are held behind closed doors, and their purpose is to form a new government as quickly as possible.

Following the establishment of the new Parliament, Speaker Igor Grosu stated that the speedy formation of a functional government is a national priority.

"Let's see how the consultations progress. It's good that all factions were timely constituted, otherwise, the process would have been delayed. The country needs a government as soon as possible. We don't have time to waste," said Igor Grosu.

The Speaker emphasized that one of the new government's first priorities will be the adoption of the 2026 Budget Law, essential for the proper functioning of institutions and economic stability. Additionally, the future Executive will prioritize strengthening economic growth, attracting investments and harnessing European funds.

Referring to Alexandru Munteanu, the candidate proposed by PAS for the position of Prime Minister, the speaker said that he comes with a pragmatic and results-oriented approach.

According to the supreme law, the nominee for the position of prime minister will request, within 15 days, the Parliament's confidence vote on the activity program and the composition of the Cabinet of Ministers. The new Government will be invested if it obtains the majority of deputies' votes.

Following the validation of the elections on September 28, the government led by Prime Minister Dorin Recean is limited in its competencies. Previously, Recean announced that he is stepping down from politics and will not retain even the deputy mandate.
