Vulcanesti-Chisinau power line construction project 90 per cent complete; Moldovan energy minister says intense work carried out

The project on the construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau Energy Independence Line is 90-per cent complete. Figures to this effect today were presented by Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu. He assured that the power line would be put into operation within the scheduled timeframe, meaning by the end of 2025.

The minister said that work at the power line sites was progressing rapidly. Just today, the official visited the Chisinau Electrical Station, which is a component of this project.

“The project has three components: the line, the Vulcanesti Electrical Station, and the Chisinau Station. The component that includes the power line is 90 per cent complete. The Line is advancing quickly, things are evolving very well and I am pleased with the achievements reached so far. At the same time, today I was nearby  the Chisinau Station, where there is a huge construction site, intensive work is being carried out to set the poles of the conductors and progress is very rapid,” the minister said at a news conference.

The construction works of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau overhead power line started effectively in April 2024 and are part of the Power System Development Project, financed by the World Bank Group. Its value is 61 million euros, of which about 27 million euros is for the construction of the Line.

The Vulcanesti–Chisinau overhead power line, with a length of 157 km, will include over 500 poles and 1,500 km of conductors across three phases, creating a strategic connection between the south and the center of Moldova. The project spans eight districts and 35 localities. Depending on the power system regime, the line will be able to ensure the transit of a power flow of up to 630 MVA, which could meet the need for 50 per cent of energy consumption on peak periods.

The construction of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line is a project of strategic importance for the energy security of the country. The new power line will allow the transport of electricity from Romania or other European markets to Chisinau, without passing through the Moldovan power plant located in the Transnistrian region.
