European Parliament proposes 25-million-euros increase for Eastern Partnership, including Moldova, in EU's budget for 2026

The European Parliament proposes a 25-million-euros increase for the Eastern Partnership, including Moldova, in the EU’s budget for 2026. An amendment to this effect today was voted by the plenum of the European Parliament.

MEP Siegfried Muresan emphasized that this increase was necessary, in order to partially compensate for the decision of the United States to withdraw support for civil society in the region.

"The civil society plays an essential role in strengthening democracy in the countries in our neighborhood, especially in candidate countries like Moldova, which are facing anti-democratic pressures and aggressions on behalf of the Russian Federation. In the context of the withdrawal of the American support, we believe it is the duty of the European Union to support independent non-governmental organizations, so that they can continue their work," said Siegfried Muresan.

Following today's vote, the amendment becomes part of the European Parliament's official position at the final negotiations, in the coming weeks, with the Council and Commission on the European Union’s Budget for 2026.
