Igor Grosu, re-elected as parliament speaker, calls on political parties to take responsible decisions for Moldova
The leader of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), Igor Grosu, today was re-elected as speaker of Moldova’s parliament, following a secret ballot conducted during the legislature’s plenary meeting. Grosu's candidacy, put forward by the parliamentary majority, was backed by 55 deputies, while his opponent, Alexandr Stoianoglo, proposed by the Alternative faction, received 32 votes.
The election procedure for the parliament speaker was organized and conducted by a special committee of the legislature chaired by PAS MP Veronica Rosca. The voting took place in the parliament's hall, where two voting booths were set up. The ballot included two candidates: Igor Grosu and Alexandr Stoianoglo. The lawmakers on behalf of the Our Party and Democracy at Home Political Party factions refused to participate in the election.
Veronica Rosca, the chairperson of the special committee, said:
‘’The voting concluded at 17:00, in accordance with the approved regulations, without incidents or problems. A total of 106 ballots were printed and 87 deputies participated. All the ballots were valid and the count showed 55 votes for Igor Grosu and 32 for Alexandr Stoianoglo.’’
Igor Grosu was re-elected as parliament speaker, in accordance with Article 64, paragraph 2 of Moldova’s Constitution and Article 9 of the parliament’s regulations.
Zinaida Greceanii, the senior member who moderated the constitutive session of the parliament of the 12th legislative period, handed Igor Grosu the Standard of the Moldova’s parliament speaker, which symbolizes the speaker’s authority in the supreme representative body of the people.
Newly re-elected as parliament speaker, Igor Grosu said that he felt honored. The speaker emphasized that the current parliament must be part of the European Integration Generation:
‘’I accept the continuation of the objectives we have started together with great responsibility and honor. I am sure that we are all infused with the responsibility that we have over the next four years. We have a unique chance to be part of the European Integration Generation and we are obligated to become the European Integration Generation, in the name and respect of those who were at the basis of the national renaissance decades ago.’’
Grosu outlined the immediate goals of the parliament and legislative priorities:
‘’We are facing a very important exercise: consultations on the designation of the candidate for government and his voting, budgetary adjustment, which needs to be done as soon as possible, and discussing the 2026 budget, essential for municipalities, institutions and the business environment. Besides this, the parliamentary diplomacy must be strengthened, in order to support and explain the importance of reforms necessary for approaching the European Union and achieving the objective of joining by 2028.’’
The parliament speaker called for unity and political responsibility:
‘’Politics is not just about applause, but also about difficult decisions made in the interest of the citizens. I call on to all parties: when national interest dictates, we must rise above party interests and make responsible decisions for Moldova. Once again, thank you for your trust, and I wish you all good luck!'
‘’People have given us a mandate not to stop and continue to move in the right direction, because I am sure that everyone in this room wants to live in a developed and prosperous Moldova. This is our responsibility to raise living standards, modernize institutions and make investments that ensure economic growth.’’
Igor Grosu returns to lead the legislature and will preside over parliament for the next four years, with the commitment to complete the negotiation for Moldova's accession to the European Union by 2028 and to strengthen the work of state institutions.
