Food and Agriculture Organization, agriculture ministry identify solutions to challenges of COVID-19 in agriculture, food
Chisinau, 4 May /MOLDPRES/- Minister of Agriculture, Regional Development and Environment Ion Perju and representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Moldova Raimund Jehle discussed today in an online dialogue the current needs of the agricultural and food sector to overcome negative effects of COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion focused on joint efforts to address current challenges in the field.
The main topic was the social and economic impact of the drought and crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on agriculture, food and living standards in our country, especially in rural areas. "Other important issues were related to difficult situation of small farmers, who are facing problems in marketing production, as well as the situation in the wine sector, which is affected by disruptions in trade and consumption," FAO sources said.
In the context of many challenges for agriculture and food security in the country, FAO announced it will take several assistance measures for Moldova. Thus, the organization expressed willingness to support the Ministry of Agriculture to monitor and analyze the consequences of COVID-19 in agriculture and food, as well as to mobilize the necessary resources to overcome them.
Thus, it was decided to hold a videoconference with agriculture ministers of neighboring countries to jointly discuss and analyze the actions needed to maintain an adequate level of food security in the region. The online conference will be facilitated by FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia.
