MIA Instant Payments, two years after launch
The MIA Instant Payments system, which today marks two years since its launch, has become one of the most important digital transformations in the financial sector of the Republic of Moldova, currently being used by every second citizen of our country who has a bank account. It is a common tool for fast money transfers, allowing real-time payments in just a few seconds, directly from internet and mobile banking applications, without depending on the working hours of payment service providers.
The new system, created by the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), has fundamentally changed the way citizens, companies and public institutions make payments, contributing to increased economic efficiency, reduced operational costs and accelerated digitalization of payments in Moldovan lei.
NBM data show that, from the launch of the new system until now, both the number of its users and the volume of transactions have grown steadily. The use of a phone number to initiate payments has made transfers simpler and more accessible for an ever-growing number of users.
MIA’s development continued with the integration of business payments (P2B) on 31 July 2024 and payments to public institutions (P2G) on 31 July 2025, consolidating the system’s role as national payment infrastructure. This expansion enabled faster and more efficient financial interactions between citizens, the business environment and the state, contributing to greater transparency and the simplification of administrative processes.
Starting 2 March 2026, the MIA Instant Payments system expanded further, enabling instant transfers between legal entities (Business to Business - B2B), thus diversifying the use of fast payments for the business sector. Companies can initiate and receive payments in Moldovan lei 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with real-time settlement, including outside the working hours of payment service providers.
Thus, instant B2B transfers can be used to pay invoices, advances or other commercial payments, facilitating the management of financial flows. The fee is 0.7% of the transfer amount, capped at 40 lei per transaction, ensuring predictable costs for companies.
NBM Governor Anca Dragu emphasizes that the evolution of the MIA Instant Payments system reflects the positive transformations taking place in the economy of the Republic of Moldova and its capacity to adopt modern, secure and transparent financial solutions, based on trust and oriented towards the real needs of people and businesses.
“MIA shows how modern payments can make life easier for citizens and offer small businesses effective tools for development. At the same time, MIA demonstrates that the Republic of Moldova is becoming a more connected and inclusive economy, better prepared for its European path. Through its constant evolution, MIA is changing the way money circulates in the economy, and for the business sector this translates into speed, efficiency and a real competitive advantage,” says the NBM Governor.
Among the priorities of the central bank is the interconnection of the MIA system with other regional instant payment systems, in the context of the Republic of Moldova’s accession on 6 March 2025 to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and its technical interconnection with the European financial ecosystem on 6 October 2025.
