Energy Minister discussed with US and EU officials about investments in Moldova’s energy infrastructure

The Republic of Moldova is strengthening its position on the regional energy map by participating in a roundtable - Advancing Energy Corridors in the Three Seas Region. Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu represented the country at this high-level event held in Dubrovnik on April 28–29, at the invitation of US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright.

During the meeting, which brought together officials from the US and the European Union, Junghietu presented Moldova’s vision for genuine energy security. Although the country has reached a higher level of safety compared to the 2021–2022 period, the official warned that the lack of domestic production and of its own storage capacities remain critical vulnerabilities.

The national strategy relies on a mix of non-Russian sources, combining gas supplies from Romania (including the future Neptun Deep project) with LNG and resources transiting Greece through the Vertical Corridor.

"Moldova does not rely on a single source or a single route. Step by step, we are building a balanced and credible supply portfolio that can provide stability and predictability. For us, it is essential that this diversification be achieved at a sustainable price," Junghietu said.

The minister stressed that Moldova’s energy security is based on four fundamental elements: secure supply contracts; guaranteed transport capacity; access to storage; financial guarantees.

"At present, the country is already applying strict measures, such as the 15% storage obligation and maintaining a reference level of 57 million m³ of gas for the cold season. We are advocating for more effective cross-border coordination and the full use of existing infrastructure, including the Trans-Balkan route," the Energy Minister emphasized.

On the sidelines of the summit, Dorin Junghietu held bilateral meetings with US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright and with the European Commission’s Director-General for Energy, Ditte Juul Jørgensen.

Discussions with the US official focused on attracting investments in energy technologies and infrastructure, with the minister stressing that US support is vital for modernizing the sector and ensuring access to clean energy.

In the dialogue with the representative of the European Commission, emphasis was placed on implementing the reforms needed for full integration into the European energy market, in the context of the Growth Plan for Moldova. Both meetings reconfirmed international support for Chișinău’s efforts to turn theoretical energy corridors into real economic benefits for citizens.
