Construction of Straseni–Gutinas power line to become strategic public utility project in Moldova

The construction of the Straseni–Gutinas power line will be provided the status of a strategic public utility project for the country’s energy security. The process of declaring it a public utility project has been initiated by the Energy Ministry. This is the third high-voltage power line that will interconnect Moldova with Romania and, consequently, the European Union.

As a strategic project of national interest, special mechanisms will be applied to accelerate its implementation, including simplifying and speeding up administrative procedures, facilitating the process of getting approvals and permits, as well as carrying out expropriation procedures for public utility purposes in a faster regime.

According to the Energy Ministry, the Straseni–Gutinas power line is a strategic investment aimed at enhancing the interconnection capacity with the ENTSO-E system via Romania, contributing to the expansion of electricity transfer capacity and ensuring a safe and stable supply for consumers. At present, commercial transfer capacity is limited and the implementation of this project will allow a significant expansion of that capacity.

The project is part of efforts to modernize the national energy infrastructure, alongside other interconnection initiatives, such as the Vulcanesti–Chisinau and Balti–Suceava lines. The route of the Straseni–Gutinas line, with an estimated length of approximately 70 km on the territory of Moldova, will cross 25 localities in the districts of Straseni, Calarasi, Nisporeni and Hancesti.

The estimated cost of the project is about 130 million U.S. dollars, and its financing is to be provided by the Government of the United States.
