Moldova and IMF reached agreement on new three‑year cooperation program

The Republic of Moldova and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) have reached an agreement on a new cooperation program for the next three years. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu at the beginning of today’s Government meeting.

The Prime Minister emphasized that for the Republic of Moldova this outcome represents a clear signal that international partners consider that our country is moving in the right direction, at a good pace, despite external circumstances that remain complicated.

He also underlined that the decision means there is a common understanding regarding the reforms, their pace, and priorities for the upcoming period.

“The Government and the IMF have reached an agreement on a new cooperation program for the next three years. This morning we had a meeting with the IMF Mission, which has been in Chișinău for almost two weeks. This means that the Republic of Moldova and the IMF are on the same wavelength regarding the country’s economic direction. Certain technical discrepancies have been overcome and there is a common understanding regarding the reforms, the pace, and the priorities of the next period. Technically, this understanding is not just an automatic formality, but the result of considerable effort. For us it is a clear signal that international partners consider that the Republic of Moldova has a professional team and is moving in the right direction, at a good pace, even when external circumstances remain very complicated,” he said.

Alexandru Munteanu said that the next step is the approval of the Agreement by the IMF Executive Board.

The decision was announced after a team of IMF experts, led by Alina Iancu, visited Chișinău from 7–20 May 2026. The mission held discussions with the authorities following the request for a new program supported through the Policy Coordination Instrument (PCI).
