VIDEO // Discussions on sugar market situation held in Moldova; economic development minister says compromise reached

The Economic Development and Digitalization Ministry (MDED) has participated in the public-private dialogue dedicated to regulations in the field of sugar production and import. Deputy Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmochescu said that, following the discussions, a compromise had been identified together with all sides involved.

Eugeniu Osmochescu emphasized the importance of identifying balanced solutions that ensure the competitiveness of the agro-industrial sector, protect local producers and provide predictable access to raw materials for processing companies. At the same time, the official noted that the discussions had led to a common solution.

‘’The issue of sugar in Moldova recently has been widely debated in the public space. The Economic Development and Digitalization Ministry has launched an extensive negotiation process with all interested parties, specifically in order to protect producers of Moldova; which is why, we withdrew a draft Government decision. Yesterday, until late in the evening, we reached a compromise together with all sides involved. Thanks to the involvement of the private sector, of parliament representatives at the level of MPs, as well as on the platform of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we have reached common ground. All speculations and concerns have been resolved together. Only together can we succeed, and we will succeed," said Eugeniu Osmochescu.

The MDED presented the current situation of the sugar market, data on imports and the measures under consideration to support the sector. The participants also discussed the need to extend mechanisms that facilitate companies' access to sugar intended for industrial processing, as well as support for sugar beet cultivation in Moldova.

The public-private dialogue was organized on the platform of the Sectoral Entrepreneurship Committee of Moldova’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in the context in which the Sugar Producers Union of Moldova and the Sugar Beet Producers Association of Moldova have recently requested asked the government to urgently resume the procedure for promoting and approving the Decision on regulating sugar imports. According to them, for a week, since the expiration of the provisional measure on April 27, 2026, the sugar market in Moldova has been completely unregulated with regard to imports from Serbia, Belarus, and Russia, while sugar from the EU, the United Kingdom and Ukraine enters under tariff quotas and a 75-per cent duty.
