Deputy Prime Minister about sugar market situation: We will hold discussions with all stakeholders

Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economic Development and Digitalization Eugeniu Osmochescu announced today that discussions will be organized with all stakeholders to analyze the situation on the sugar market and identify solutions to protect producers and consumers.

“Today, on the platform of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, we will have a discussion with all the parties involved: both producers from the Republic of Moldova, those who use sugar—whether imported or domestic—in local production, and traders who import sugar and sell it on the Moldovan market, in order to set all the points correctly and in full transparency. After that, we will return with the draft government decision, because we want to regulate the sugar market in the Republic of Moldova, including for the purpose of protecting producers in Moldova, not only sugar producers, by the way, but also those who use sugar as a raw material in baking processes, for example, or in any other existing agri-food process,” said Eugeniu Osmochescu after today’s Government meeting.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s reaction comes after the Sugar Producers Union of Moldova and the Sugar Beet Producers Association of Moldova recently asked the Government to urgently resume the procedure for promoting and approving the Decision on regulating sugar imports. According to them, for a week now, since the expiry of the provisional measure on April 27, 2026, the sugar market in Moldova has been completely unregulated with respect to imports from Serbia, Belarus and Russia, while sugar from the EU, the United Kingdom and Ukraine enters under tariff quotas and a 75% duty.
