Moldova increases eightfold renewable energy production capacity in last four years

The renewable energy production capacity has increased eightfold in the last four years, reaching almost 650 MW. This means that now, on days with friendly  weather conditions, up to 30 per cent of the energy consumed in Moldova comes from renewable sources, a target previously set for 2030. For comparison, as little as three per cent of consumption came from green energy in 2020.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that Moldova had great potential for development in the green energy sector and soon the renewable energy production capacity would increase by 165 MW thanks to a recently concluded tender for the construction of large-capacity wind and photovoltaic parks.

‘’In the last four years, the government has taken concrete steps to improve the energy security of Moldova. We have two goals in this field: to increase the share of renewable energy in national consumption and to become energy exporters, as  Moldova has a great production potential,’’ said Dorin Recean. He met with the director of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Francesco La Camera.

Dorin Recean noted that Moldova aimed to attract investments to transform it from a consumer into a green energy exporter.

‘’This autumn, we will launch a tender for the construction of wind parks with energy storage systems. This will allow us to make the network more stable and efficient,’’ the prime minister said.

In parallel, the work to interconnect our power grid with the European Union’s one continues. In this regard, Dorin Recean assured that the Chisinau-Vulcanesti high-voltage line would be completed by the end of this year.

‘’For the first time in 33 years, citizens will no longer risk being left without light due to politically motivated external decisions,’’ the prime minister added.

The Ministry of Energy has recently informed that new large-scale renewable energy production parks, accompanied by energy storage batteries, would be built in Moldova. The tender to this end is to be launched in next autumn.
